College and Career Ready!

The Common Core Standards MISSION:

The Common Core State Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers. With American students fully prepared for the future, our communities will be best positioned to compete successfully in the global economy.

Before the Common Core Standards, each state had their own set of standards for students to learn, and show mastery at specific grade levels. Missouri had the "Grade Level Expectations". These standards brought about the MAP (Missouri Assessment Program) Test for students in Missouri, grades 3-8 and 11. This will be the last school year, 2013-2014, for the MAP test. Students will begin to take the Smarter Balanced Assessment in 2015. This assessment will be based off the new standards, Common Core.

Please take some time and take the sample Smarter Balanced Assessment. You will notice that the technology to the assessment is a huge piece, versus the paper and pencil MAP test.

High School courses also take what is called, End of Course Exams (EOC's). The Missouri Assessment Program includes required End-of-Course assessments in the subject areas of Algebra I, Biology, English II and Government. Beginning with the Class of 2016, American History and English I are also required. End-of-Course assessments are taken when a student has received instruction on the course-level expectations for an assessment, regardless of grade level.
